Clashes Erupt at Anti Government Protests in Serbia, Dozens Injured

A massive crowd of protesters in Belgrade, Serbia, holding signs in Serbian Cyrillic and a large poster of a tiger, during the August 2025 anti-government demonstrations.

After months of mounting pressure, Serbia’s political crisis has entered a more dangerous phase.

Anti government protests that once remained largely peaceful have now turned violent, with clashes breaking out between demonstrators and supporters of the ruling government.

The unrest marks a critical moment for the Balkan nation, where tensions have been building for nearly a year and are now spilling into the streets.

From Protest to Confrontation

The latest escalation unfolded on Tuesday evening, when violence erupted in multiple locations across the country.

The most intense clashes occurred in Vrbas, a town northwest of Belgrade, where opposing groups confronted each other outside offices of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).

According to eyewitness accounts, projectiles including flares, rocks, and bottles were thrown, triggering chaotic scenes. Riot police were deployed to separate the groups and restore order.

Authorities confirmed that dozens were injured, including 16 police officers, and several individuals have been detained.

Similar, though less severe, incidents were reported in:

  • Novi Sad
  • Niš
  • Bačka Palanka

In Belgrade, police also intervened as crowds gathered in the city center.

The Spark: A Tragedy That Triggered a Movement

To understand the current unrest, it’s important to look back to November 2024.

That’s when a train station canopy collapsed in Novi Sad, killing 16 people and shocking the nation.

The disaster quickly became a symbol of deeper problems.

Public anger turned into widespread accusations of corruption and negligence, particularly in state funded infrastructure projects.

What began as grief soon transformed into protest and then into a nationwide movement.

A Growing Challenge to Power

Over the past nine months, demonstrations have expanded dramatically.

Led largely by university students, the protests have drawn hundreds of thousands of participants, evolving into a broader challenge to the government of Aleksandar Vučić.

Protesters accuse Vučić who has held power for over a decade of:

  • Eroding democratic institutions
  • Restricting media freedom
  • Allowing corruption to flourish

As a result, the movement has shifted from a single issue protest to a wider call for political change.

Rising Tensions: Counter-Protests and Political Rhetoric

The situation has become more volatile in recent weeks.

Supporters of the government have begun organizing counter demonstrations, increasing the risk of direct confrontation.

At the same time, pro government media and officials have labeled protesters as “terrorists”, a characterization strongly rejected by demonstrators.

This escalation in rhetoric has further deepened divisions, turning political disagreement into street level conflict.

Protesters insist that recent violence was initiated by government supporters, not by the movement itself.

What Protesters Want

Despite the unrest, the core demands of the movement remain consistent:

  • Early parliamentary elections
  • The resignation of Interior Minister Ivica Dačić
  • Greater accountability for corruption and governance failures

So far, President Vučić has refused to call early elections, maintaining his grip on power.

International Stakes: Why the World Is Watching

Serbia’s internal crisis is not happening in isolation.

The country is officially a candidate for membership in the European Union, but its foreign policy has taken a more complex path under Vučić.

Belgrade has maintained close ties with:

  • Russia
  • China

This balancing act has raised concerns in Western capitals.

Political instability and democratic backsliding could complicate Serbia’s EU ambitions, especially if unrest continues or intensifies.

A Turning Point for Serbia

Serbia now finds itself at a critical crossroads.

What began as a protest over a tragic accident has evolved into a nationwide political crisis.

The recent violence signals a dangerous shift, one that could further destabilize the country if tensions continue to rise.

The coming weeks will be crucial.

Whether through dialogue, elections, or continued confrontation, the direction Serbia takes next will shape not only its domestic future but also its place in Europe.
