The 2026 FIFA World Cup officially began in unforgettable fashion as Mexico welcomed the world with the first chapter of an unprecedented opening ceremony trilogy. For the first time in tournament history, the World Cup is being hosted across three countries Mexico, Canada, and the United States while also featuring an expanded 48-team format.

The celebrations started in Mexico City on June 11, setting the tone for what promises to be the biggest World Cup ever staged.

Mexico Showcases Culture and Creativity at Estadio Azteca

The opening ceremony at Mexico City Stadium, better known as Estadio Azteca, was a vibrant tribute to Mexican culture and identity.

At the heart of the production was papel picado, the traditional Mexican folk art known for its colorful, intricately cut paper banners. Organizers transformed the stadium with massive digital displays and physical installations inspired by the craft’s geometric patterns, creating a visually stunning spectacle.

Hundreds of local performers dressed in traditional attire filled the pitch, blending indigenous-inspired choreography with contemporary entertainment. The result was a celebration that felt both deeply rooted in Mexican heritage and globally accessible.

Global Music Stars Deliver Memorable Performances

The ceremony featured an impressive lineup of international and Mexican artists, combining regional traditions with worldwide pop appeal.

The headline performance came from Shakira and Burna Boy, who debuted the tournament’s official song, “Dai Dai,” live for the first time. Performing beside a giant World Cup trophy replica, the pair energized the crowd as red and green smoke filled the stadium.

Another emotional highlight featured Andrea Bocelli, Ejae, and David Guetta, who performed the tournament anthem, “DNA (More Than a Game).”

Mexican music icons also played a major role throughout the ceremony. Legendary rock band Maná delivered a crowd-pleasing sing-along, while Los Ángeles Azules brought their signature cumbia rhythms to the celebration.

Just before kickoff, Alejandro Fernández performed the Mexican national anthem, creating a powerful atmosphere inside the packed stadium.

An interesting detail behind the official World Cup song is that “Dai Dai” loosely translates to “Come on, come on” in Italian slang, reflecting the spirit of competition and determination. The song also references football legends including Pelé, Diego Maradona, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Mohamed Salah.

Mexico Finally Wins a World Cup Opening Match

Once the festivities ended, attention shifted to the football and Mexico delivered a historic result.

Playing in front of more than 81,000 supporters, El Tri defeated South Africa 2-0, securing the country’s first-ever victory in a World Cup opening match after seven previous attempts.

Quiñones Ignites the Crowd Early

Mexico wasted little time taking control.

In the eighth minute, forward Julián Quiñones intercepted a misplaced defensive pass before calmly finishing through the legs of goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. The goal sparked celebrations throughout the stadium and immediately put the hosts in command.

Jiménez Seals the Victory

South Africa remained competitive until the second half, but veteran striker Raúl Jiménez effectively ended the contest in the 66th minute.

The experienced forward rose above defenders to meet a cross and powered a header into the net, doubling Mexico’s lead and sending the home crowd into another frenzy.

Match Descends Into Chaos

The final stages became increasingly physical, leading to three red cards.

South Africa’s Sphephelo Sithole was dismissed in the 49th minute for bringing down Brian Gutiérrez. Matters worsened for the Africans in the 83rd minute when a VAR review upgraded Themba Zwane’s challenge from yellow to red.

Mexico also finished with 10 men after César Montes received a red card deep into stoppage time following an altercation.

Despite the late drama, Mexico comfortably secured all three points.

South Korea Completes Group A’s Opening Round

Earlier in Guadalajara, South Korea produced a strong second-half comeback to defeat the Czech Republic 2-1.

After a scoreless first half, the Czech Republic struck first through Ladislav Krejčí in the 58th minute.

However, South Korea responded quickly. Midfielder Hwang In-beom equalized eight minutes later before striker Oh Hyeon-gyu scored the winner in the 79th minute.

A major factor behind the comeback was South Korea’s dominance in possession, controlling 69 percent of the ball during the second half.

Lee Kang-in Steals the Spotlight

The standout performer was Lee Kang-in, who delivered one of the tournament’s best individual displays so far.

The creative midfielder earned a 9.0 match rating after completing every one of his 17 final-third passes, winning 10 duels, completing five successful dribbles, and providing the assist for South Korea’s equalizer.

Canada and United States Prepare for Their Turn

The World Cup spotlight now shifts to the tournament’s other co-hosts.

Unlike previous tournaments where matches often overlap, FIFA scheduled the opening fixtures back-to-back, allowing fans to watch every game without conflicts.

Canada becomes the next host nation to take the field when it faces Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto. Later, the United States begins its campaign against Paraguay at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
