Brazil Leave It Late to Eliminate Japan

Brazil looked to be heading for extra time before Gabriel Martinelli struck a dramatic winner in the fifth minute of stoppage time to seal a 2-1 victory over Japan at Houston Stadium, Texas.

Japan stunned the five-time world champions in the 29th minute when Kaishu Sano produced a brilliant solo run before firing a low shot beyond Alisson Becker to give the Asian side a deserved halftime lead.

Brazil responded after the interval following tactical changes by head coach Carlo Ancelotti, who introduced Endrick to add attacking spark.

The equalizer arrived in the 54th minute when Casemiro headed home a deep cross from Gabriel Magalhães. Brazil continued to dominate, with Vinícius Júnior coming within inches of putting his side ahead before goalkeeper Zion Suzuki tipped his effort onto the post.

Just as extra time appeared inevitable, Bruno Guimarães slipped a perfectly weighted pass into the box, allowing Martinelli to calmly finish from close range in the 95th minute and send Brazil into the last 16.

Paraguay Shock Germany in Historic Penalty Shootout

One of the tournament’s biggest upsets unfolded at Boston Stadium, Massachusetts, where Paraguay knocked out Germany after winning 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw.

Germany dominated possession throughout much of the contest but struggled to break down Paraguay’s disciplined defensive shape under coach Gustavo Alfaro.

Despite spending long periods without the ball, Paraguay struck first in the 42nd minute. Matías Galarza delivered an excellent cross that Julio Enciso headed beyond Manuel Neuer, scoring Paraguay’s first-ever goal in a World Cup knockout match.

Germany responded quickly after halftime. In the 54th minute, Florian Wirtz found Kai Havertz, whose powerful header restored parity.

The Germans thought they had completed the comeback when Jonathan Tah found the net late in regulation, but the goal was ruled out after a foul on goalkeeper Orlando Gill.

Neither side could find a breakthrough during extra time, sending the contest to penalties.

Gill emerged as Paraguay’s hero after saving Germany’s opening penalty from Havertz. Following misses from both teams, José Canale converted the decisive kick to complete a memorable 4-3 shootout victory, sending La Albirroja into the Round of 16.

Morocco Edge Netherlands After Another Shootout Thriller

Morocco joined Brazil and Paraguay in the next round after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at Monterrey Stadium, Mexico.

The Dutch controlled much of the match before finally breaking the deadlock in the 72nd minute through Cody Gakpo, who finished confidently after being played through by Crysencio Summerville. The goal came just days after Gakpo publicly shared the tragic loss of his unborn son, making the moment especially emotional.

Morocco refused to surrender.

Deep into stoppage time, Chemsdine Talbi floated a cross into the penalty area where substitute defender Issa Diop rose highest to head home an equalizer in the 91st minute, forcing extra time.

Goalkeepers Bart Verbruggen and Yassine Bounou produced several outstanding saves during the additional 30 minutes to keep the scores level.

In the penalty shootout, Bounou delivered once again by denying Summerville from the spot before Ismael Saibari calmly converted the decisive penalty to send Morocco through.

The victory sets up a Round of 16 showdown with tournament co-hosts Canada.
