The FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 has officially come to an end after Switzerland defeated Colombia on penalties, completing the eight-team line-up for the quarter-finals.
With the knockout stage now wrapped up, the tournament takes a one-day break on July 8 before the quarter-finals begin, with some of the world’s biggest football nations still chasing World Cup glory.
Switzerland Survive Colombia’s Challenge in Penalty Drama
The final Round of 16 match produced 120 minutes of tense, scoreless football before everything was decided from the penalty spot.
Switzerland kept their composure to secure a 4-3 penalty shootout victory over Colombia, booking their place in the last eight.
For the Swiss, Granit Xhaka, Zeki Amdouni, Cedric Itten, and Rubén Vargas all converted their penalties. Colombia responded through Juan Fernando Quintero, Jaminton Campaz, and Luis Díaz, but it wasn’t enough to keep their World Cup dream alive.
The victory sends Switzerland into a quarter-final showdown against defending champions Argentina, one of the tournament’s most anticipated matchups.
Argentina Produce One of the Greatest World Cup Comebacks
Earlier in the Round of 16, Argentina stunned Egypt with an incredible 3-2 comeback, overturning a two-goal deficit in the final minutes to keep their title defense alive.
Egypt looked set to pull off one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.
They struck first in the 15th minute when Yasser Ibrahim powered home a header from a set-piece before goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir denied Lionel Messi from the penalty spot just five minutes later.
The pressure mounted on Argentina when Mostafa Ziko doubled Egypt’s advantage in the 67th minute following a quick counterattack led by Mohamed Salah.
With elimination looming, Argentina launched an unforgettable comeback.
Cristian Romero pulled one back in the 79th minute with a powerful header from Messi’s pinpoint cross, giving La Albiceleste renewed belief.
Just four minutes later, Messi redeemed his earlier penalty miss, smashing a first-time effort off the underside of the crossbar to level the score at 2-2. The strike marked his eighth goal of the tournament, strengthening his lead in the Golden Boot race.
The dramatic turnaround was completed in stoppage time.
After Argentina won possession deep inside their own half, they launched a rapid counterattack. Lautaro Martínez delivered a cross from the right, and Enzo Fernández arrived perfectly to head home the 92nd-minute winner, sealing one of the most memorable victories of the 2026 World Cup.
