Apple has entered the foldable smartphone market with the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, at a starting price of $1,999. The device was unveiled at Apple’s September 2026 event, which also marked a major leadership change for the company.
The event was the first major product presentation led by John Ternus, who became Apple’s chief executive officer on September 1, 2026. Former CEO Tim Cook has moved into the role of executive chairman.
Ternus previously led Apple’s hardware engineering organization, making his first event as CEO particularly significant. The company’s latest hardware lineup reflects that engineering background, with the iPhone Duo putting considerable emphasis on its hinge, titanium construction, display technology and performance.
Alongside the foldable iPhone, Apple introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, updated AirPods with active noise cancellation, and the Apple Watch Series 12.
iPhone Duo brings a passport-style foldable design
The iPhone Duo uses a book-style, passport-inspired design rather than the vertical folding format found on some other foldable phones.
When closed, the device has a 5.4-inch outer display. Opening it reveals a much larger 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate.
Apple has also focused heavily on the folding mechanism. The Duo uses a Grade 5 titanium frame and a custom liquid-metal titanium hinge system containing more than 100 components. The design is intended to make the center crease less noticeable while maintaining the durability required for a frequently folded display.
The inner display also features a nano-texture finish and can reach up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness, giving the Duo a screen that is designed for both productivity and media consumption.
At 5.4mm thick when unfolded per side and 11.1mm when folded, the Duo is remarkably thin for a first-generation foldable, although Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 remains slimmer.
Apple is positioning the Duo as a productivity device
Apple’s pitch for the iPhone Duo goes beyond simply offering a larger screen.
The company highlighted side-by-side multitasking, allowing users to work with multiple apps at once on the expanded display. This gives the Duo a more tablet-like role while retaining the portability of a smartphone.
That approach puts the device somewhere between Apple’s traditional iPhone and iPad experiences. The larger internal screen can provide more room for documents, communication, browsing and other productivity-focused tasks without requiring users to carry a separate tablet.
The software experience is built around iOS 27, with Apple emphasizing multi-window workflows and continuity with the broader Mac and iPad ecosystem.
A20 Pro chip gives the Duo flagship performance
The iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip, built using a 2nm manufacturing process.
The processor features a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and a dual 16-core Neural Engine configuration. The Duo also comes with 12GB of unified memory, putting it on the same performance tier as the iPhone 18 Pro models.
Storage starts at 256GB and extends to 2TB, giving buyers several options depending on whether they prioritize price or maximum local storage.
Apple has also introduced its own C2 modem alongside the N1 wireless chip. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0 and Ultra-Wideband 3.
Dual 48MP cameras take a different approach
Apple has equipped the iPhone Duo with a dual 48MP Fusion camera system.
The main camera uses a 48MP sensor with a 2x lossless zoom capability, while the second 48MP sensor provides an ultra-wide field of view and macro photography.
Unlike the iPhone 18 Pro models, the Duo does not have a dedicated telephoto camera. Apple instead relies on its high-resolution sensors and computational photography to provide additional zoom capabilities.
The front camera setup includes a 12MP Center Stage under-display camera on the internal screen, along with a 12MP TrueDepth camera on the outer display.
That under-display approach helps Apple maintain a cleaner internal screen by avoiding a conventional camera cutout.
A large battery helps offset the demands of a foldable display
The iPhone Duo uses a 5,400mAh dual-cell battery system, with the split design helping Apple fit the battery around the foldable structure.
Apple rates the device for roughly 24 hours of mixed use. Charging includes 45W wired USB-C fast charging and MagSafe wireless charging.
The larger battery is one of the Duo’s advantages over Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8, which uses a smaller 4,800mAh battery.
However, battery capacity is only part of the equation. Actual battery life will depend on display brightness, app usage, cellular connectivity and other factors.
iPhone Duo vs. Galaxy Z Fold 8
The iPhone Duo enters a foldable market where Samsung already has significant experience.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 starts at $1,649, making it $350 cheaper than Apple’s $1,999 entry-level Duo.
Both phones feature a 7.6-inch internal display with a 120Hz refresh rate and peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits. However, their designs and approaches differ considerably.

The comparison reveals a clear set of trade-offs.
Samsung keeps the Fold 8 lighter and thinner
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 has the advantage in portability. At 201 grams, it is considerably lighter than the roughly 230-gram iPhone Duo.
Samsung’s foldable is also thinner, measuring 9.7mm when folded compared with Apple’s 11.1mm.
Apple counters with its larger 5,400mAh battery, giving the Duo a capacity advantage over Samsung’s 4,800mAh battery.
Apple bets on cameras, chips and ecosystem integration
Neither phone uses a dedicated periscope telephoto camera in the supplied specifications. Both instead rely heavily on high-resolution main sensors and computational photography to provide zoom capabilities while keeping the foldable body relatively thin.
The iPhone Duo uses Apple’s A20 Pro chip, while Samsung relies on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy.
The bigger difference may ultimately come from software and ecosystem.
Samsung offers S Pen support and DeX, giving the Galaxy Z Fold 8 a more established desktop-style productivity experience. Apple is instead emphasizing iOS 27, multi-window workflows and continuity between the iPhone, Mac and iPad.
For users already invested heavily in Apple’s ecosystem, that integration could be one of the Duo’s strongest selling points.
The iPhone 18 Pro models complete Apple’s 2026 lineup
The foldable iPhone was not Apple’s only major smartphone announcement.
The company also introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, both powered by the same A20 Pro platform and equipped with 12GB of unified memory.
The iPhone 18 Pro has a 6.3-inch display, while the Pro Max increases that to 6.9 inches. Both use 120Hz ProMotion displays with peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits.
Their camera systems go further than the Duo, with a triple 48MP Fusion setup consisting of a main camera, ultra-wide camera and telephoto camera. The main sensor also features a variable aperture ranging from f/1.48 to f/4.0.
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,099, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299, putting both models well below the Duo’s $1,999 entry price.
Apple’s foldable strategy comes with a significant premium
The iPhone Duo represents a major expansion of Apple’s hardware strategy.
At $1,999, however, it occupies a premium position even within the foldable market. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 starts $350 lower and is lighter and thinner, while also offering S Pen compatibility.
Apple’s response is a combination of premium materials, a high-resolution foldable display, A20 Pro performance, a larger battery and tight integration with its existing ecosystem.
The Duo therefore isn’t simply a larger iPhone. Apple is attempting to turn the foldable form factor into a productivity-focused device while maintaining the hardware and software characteristics that define the iPhone.
Its biggest challenge may not be the hardware itself, but convincing consumers that those advantages justify a $1,999 starting price.
Apple begins a new chapter
The iPhone Duo arrives at an important moment for Apple, combining a new product category with a change at the top of the company.
With John Ternus now serving as CEO and Tim Cook moving to executive chairman, Apple’s September 2026 event represents both a hardware milestone and the beginning of a new leadership era.
Whether the Duo becomes a major new product category for Apple will depend on how consumers respond to its price, design and productivity-focused approach. But with its first foldable iPhone, Apple has finally entered a market that Samsung and other Android manufacturers have been developing for years.
