World Cup Round of 32 Set After Dramatic Group Stage Finale as England, Argentina and Colombia Top Their Groups

Jude Bellingham celebrates with teammates including Ezri Konsa after scoring for England against Panama at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The FIFA World Cup group stage came to a thrilling conclusion with dramatic late goals, historic qualifications and the knockout bracket finally taking shape. England, Argentina and Colombia finished atop their respective groups, while Austria, Croatia and Portugal secured runner-up places. Algeria, Ghana and the Democratic Republic of Congo also progressed as among the tournament’s best third-placed teams after an eventful final day.

The biggest drama unfolded at Kansas City Stadium, where Algeria and Austria played out a breathtaking 3-3 draw. Riyad Mahrez appeared to have fired Algeria to victory deep into stoppage time before Saša Kalajdžić scored with virtually the final kick of the match to send Austria into the Round of 32 for the first time since 1982. The result also confirmed Algeria’s second-ever appearance in the World Cup knockout stage while ending Iran’s hopes of advancing.

Algeria and Austria Produce Instant World Cup Classic

Group J delivered one of the tournament’s most unforgettable matches.

Austria struck first in the 28th minute through Marko Arnautović, who scored his 49th international goal. Algeria responded just before halftime when Rafik Belghali finished after excellent work from Riyad Mahrez.

The lead changed hands repeatedly after the break. Marcel Sabitzer restored Austria’s advantage with a powerful strike before Mahrez helped create another equalizer, finishing from close range after a cross from Houssem Aouar.

With Austria facing elimination, Mahrez appeared to send Algeria to the top of the group by scoring in the third minute of stoppage time. However, substitute Saša Kalajdžić bundled home an equalizer in the 95th minute to rescue a point that secured Austria second place on goal difference.

The draw means:

  • Argentina wins Group J with a perfect nine points.
  • Austria finishes second.
  • Algeria advances as one of the best third-placed teams.
  • Jordan is eliminated.

England Finish Top as Kane Makes World Cup History

England secured first place in Group L with a professional 2-0 victory over Panama despite struggling to break down a disciplined defense for more than an hour.

The breakthrough finally came in the 62nd minute when Jude Bellingham volleyed home from a Bukayo Saka corner.

Five minutes later, captain Harry Kane headed in Marcus Rashford’s cross to double England’s lead. The goal was Kane’s 11th career World Cup goal, moving him past Gary Lineker as England’s all-time leading scorer in World Cup history.

Panama briefly thought they had found a late consolation through José Fajardo, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

England advances as Group L winners and will face DR Congo in the Round of 32, while Panama exits the tournament without a point.

Croatia Edge Ghana to Secure Knockout Spot

Croatia came from a tense encounter in Philadelphia with a 2-1 victory over Ghana to leap into second place in Group L.

Young midfielder Petar Sučić opened the scoring with a stunning long-range effort before Derrick Luckassen equalized for Ghana midway through the second half.

The decisive moment arrived in the 83rd minute when Nikola Vlašić headed home Luka Modrić’s corner to send Croatia into the knockout stage.

Although defeated, Ghana also progressed as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams and will face Colombia next.

Colombia and Portugal Settle for Tactical Draw

Group K was decided after Colombia and Portugal played out a tense 0-0 draw in Miami.

Colombia controlled much of the early play before Portugal responded after the hydration break. Bruno Fernandes forced an outstanding save from goalkeeper Camilo Vargas in the visitors’ best opportunity.

Deep into stoppage time, Colombia thought it had claimed victory when Davinson Sánchez found the net, but VAR ruled the goal out for a marginal offside.

The result sends Colombia into the knockout stage as group winners, with Portugal advancing in second place.

DR Congo Completes Historic Comeback

The Democratic Republic of Congo produced one of the stories of the tournament by defeating Uzbekistan 3-1 after falling behind early.

Eldor Shomurodov gave Uzbekistan a surprise lead after just 10 minutes, but DR Congo dominated the remainder of the contest.

Yoane Wissa converted a penalty to level the match before substitute Fiston Mayele completed the turnaround. Wissa added his second goal in stoppage time to seal a memorable victory.

The win sends DR Congo into the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in 52 years, where they will meet England.

Argentina Cruise Despite Resting Messi

Already assured of first place, defending champions Argentina defeated Jordan 3-1 despite making nine changes to the starting lineup.

Giovani Lo Celso opened the scoring with a curling free-kick before Lautaro Martínez converted from the penalty spot.

Jordan briefly threatened after Musa Al-Taamari pulled one back, but substitute Lionel Messi ended any hopes of a comeback with a spectacular free-kick in the 80th minute.

Messi’s strike was his sixth of the tournament and extended his remarkable run by scoring in seven consecutive World Cup matches.
