France continued their impressive run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating Morocco 2-0 in the tournament’s opening quarterfinal at Boston Stadium.

Despite missing a first-half penalty, Kylian Mbappé delivered when it mattered most, scoring the opener before setting up Ousmane Dembélé for the second goal. The victory sends Les Bleus into their third consecutive World Cup semifinal, where they will face the winner of Spain vs. Belgium.

Mbappé Recovers From Penalty Miss to Inspire France

France dominated possession from the opening whistle and looked dangerous early.

Their first real chance arrived in the fifth minute when Dayot Upamecano powered a header toward goal, but Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou made a comfortable save.

The biggest moment of the first half came in the 25th minute after Noussair Mazraoui brought down Mbappé inside the penalty area during a quick French counterattack. Following a lengthy VAR review, the referee awarded the penalty.

However, Bounou guessed correctly and produced a crucial penalty save in the 27th minute, denying Mbappé and keeping Morocco level.

France continued to pile on the pressure before halftime. Désiré Doué forced another excellent save from Bounou, while Lucas Digne struck the crossbar with a powerful long-range effort.

Despite France’s dominance, the teams went into the break locked at 0-0.

France Finally Break Through After the Hour Mark

Morocco struggled to create meaningful attacking chances, especially without injured forward Ismael Saibari, while France’s defense remained organized and disciplined.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 60th minute.

Receiving a pass from Désiré Doué, Mbappé took a touch outside the penalty area before curling a superb shot into the far corner. The strike marked his eighth goal of the tournament, moving him level with Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race.

Just six minutes later, France doubled its advantage.

Mbappé drove into the penalty area before slipping a perfectly weighted pass to Ousmane Dembélé, who calmly slotted the ball beyond Bounou to make it 2-0 and effectively end Morocco’s hopes of a comeback.

Mbappé was substituted late in the match and was later seen on the bench wearing an ice pack on his right ankle, although there was no immediate indication of a serious injury.

France Defense Delivers Another Clean Sheet

While Mbappé stole the headlines, France’s defense quietly produced another outstanding display.

Morocco found it difficult to break through the French backline, as France recorded its third consecutive clean sheet in the knockout stage.

The disciplined defensive performance ensured Morocco rarely threatened goalkeeper Mike Maignan throughout the second half.

Mbappé Joins Messi in Golden Boot Race

The quarterfinal victory also reshaped the tournament’s individual statistics.

Kylian Mbappé now has 8 goals and 3 assists, drawing level with Lionel Messi at the top of the Golden Boot standings.

Meanwhile, Michael Olise continues to lead the assist chart with 5 assists, just one shy of equaling Pelé’s single-World Cup tournament record set in 1970.
