COLOGNE, Germany – German customs officials at Cologne Bonn Airport have uncovered an astonishing and disturbing attempt to smuggle approximately 1,500 young tarantulas, deceptively hidden inside packages labeled as chocolate sponge cake. The venomous arachnids, originating from Vietnam, were discovered around three weeks ago, though authorities only made the unusual seizure public on Monday, July 14, 2025.
The bizarre discovery was made after a suspicious package, declared to contain confectionery, emitted a “noticeable smell” that was decidedly not the sweet aroma expected of baked goods. Adding to the suspicion, the boxes were unusually light for their declared seven-kilogram weight. Upon inspection, officers found hundreds of small plastic containers, each housing a young tarantula, meticulously packed into the cake boxes.
Jens Ahland, a spokesman for the Cologne customs office, expressed the sheer surprise of his team, even those hardened by years of intercepting illicit goods.s,” Ahland stated. The surviving spiders have since been transferred to the care of an expert handler, where they can receive appropriate attention.
A criminal investigation has been launched into the intended recipient of the unusual shipment, located in Germany’s Sauerland region. The estimated market value of the seized tarantulas is currently being assessed.
