The investigation into the Tumbler Ridge school shooting has taken a significant step forward as authorities confirm that the suspect was a former student of Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. The small British Columbia community, still reeling from the February 10 tragedy, is now learning more about the individual behind the attack and the sequence of events that led to one of the deadliest school related incidents in Canada in nearly four decades.
Suspect Identified: Jesse Strang
Family sources have confirmed the suspect’s identity to several news outlets, while the RCMP continues to exercise caution in officially releasing her name. Jesse Strang, 18, had recently been expelled from the school. Reports indicate she had a history of conflict with school administration over the past two years.
Strang, who had identified as female since 2023, matches the initial emergency alert description of a “woman in a dress with brown hair.” Investigators are currently examining a YouTube account believed to belong to her, which features a transgender flag and personal content, in an effort to understand any motivations or influences behind the attack.
The Sequence of Events
Authorities now believe the shooting began at a private residence in Tumbler Ridge, where two victims were killed. These individuals are believed to have had a personal connection to Strang.
Shortly after, at approximately 1:20 p.m., Strang drove to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. Six people were killed inside the school, and one additional victim died while being transported to a hospital in Dawson Creek. Strang was found deceased in a classroom from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The RCMP has recovered firearms from both locations and is tracing their origins to determine whether they were legally obtained. Superintendent Ken Floyd confirmed that while the motive remains unclear, investigators are looking into possible links between Strang’s expulsion and her choice of targets.
Updated Victim Toll and Condition
The death toll remains at 10, including the suspect. Of those injured, 27 were hospitalized, with three victims recently reported as stabilized, while two remain in serious or life-threatening condition.
Community and National Response
In response to the tragedy, Tumbler Ridge’s elementary and secondary schools will remain closed for the remainder of the week. The small town, home to roughly 2,400 residents, is coming together to support those affected.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has declared Friday a National Day of Mourning, marking the severity of this event in Canadian history. The federal and provincial governments continue to coordinate support services, including grief counseling and victim assistance programs.
The Investigation Continues
Police forensic teams are currently examining Strang’s residence and digital devices for further evidence, including potential communications or writings that may provide insight into the attack. Officials stress that while new details about the suspect have emerged, understanding the full motive may take considerable time.
As Tumbler Ridge begins the grieving process, authorities are asking the public to respect the privacy of the victims and their families while the investigation continues. The community remains in shock, facing the difficult task of coming to terms with a loss that has touched nearly every household in this small town.
