A rare and chaotic shooting in Sydney’s Inner West left one man critically injured and several others hurt after a 60 year old man allegedly opened fire from a residential property in Croydon Park on Sunday night, October 5, 2025.
Police said the man fired between 50 and 100 shots at passing vehicles and people from a unit on Georges River Road. Police vehicles were also reportedly hit during the incident, which continued for roughly two hours before specialist officers arrested the suspect.
The shooting triggered a major police operation and a lockdown of surrounding streets. Investigators were still working to establish why the shooting happened as of Monday, October 6.
Gunfire Erupts on Georges River Road
Police were called to Georges River Road near Brighton Street at about 7:45 p.m., after reports that someone was firing shots from a residential property.
According to Acting Superintendent Stephen Parry, the gunman appeared to be shooting indiscriminately at passing vehicles, including police cars. Officers treated the area as an active-shooter scene and brought in specialist resources.
The alleged shooter was inside a unit above a business. Police established a perimeter while residents were urged to stay away from the area.
During the operation, vehicles and nearby properties were damaged by gunfire. Witnesses also reported shattered windows and loud bursts of gunfire across the neighborhood.
One Man Was Shot in the Neck and Chest
The most serious injury was suffered by a man in his 50s who was traveling through Croydon Park with his family.
He was struck by a bullet in the neck and chest and initially taken to hospital in critical condition. By Monday, police said he had undergone emergency surgery and was expected to survive, although his injuries remained serious.
Other people were treated for minor injuries caused by shattered glass, shrapnel and shock. ABC News reported that as many as 16 people were treated by paramedics at the scene, while others were taken to hospital for further treatment.
The scale of the incident was particularly alarming because many of those affected appeared to have been ordinary motorists and people in the area, rather than known targets.
Police End Two-Hour Standoff With Arrest
The shooting continued until about 9:30 p.m., when specialist police entered the unit and arrested the 60 year old suspect.
The operation involved the Tactical Operations Unit, police negotiators, PolAir and the Dog Unit. A number of firearms were seized, including a high-calibre rifle believed to have been used during the shooting.
The suspect suffered minor injuries during the arrest and was taken to hospital under police guard. He was later cleared to return to police custody.
Police praised the officers who entered the property, describing the operation as highly dangerous because officers had been exposed to rapid gunfire.
Investigators Still Do Not Know the Motive
By Monday, investigators had not established why the shooting happened.
Police said there was no known connection to terrorism or organized crime. They were examining the suspect’s background and circumstances as they worked to understand what prompted the alleged attack.
Police also said the man had no known history of mental illness, while stressing that the investigation into his motives was still continuing.
That uncertainty has added to the shock in Croydon Park. Residents were confronted with an apparently random attack in an otherwise ordinary suburban setting, with bullets hitting cars and other property along a busy road.
A Rare Event in a Country With Strict Gun Laws
The shooting is unusual in Australia, where mass public shootings are comparatively rare following major firearm reforms introduced after the 1996 Port Arthur massacre.
Australia’s gun laws were significantly tightened after the massacre, including restrictions on certain firearms and a national firearm buyback program. Those measures have become a central part of the country’s approach to reducing gun violence.
The Croydon Park shooting does not change that broader history, but it has renewed attention on firearm access, public safety and how authorities respond to an armed person in a densely populated area.
Police described the incident as highly unusual, particularly because the alleged gunman appeared to fire randomly at people and vehicles.
Croydon Park Residents Left Shaken
For people living and working near Georges River Road, the immediate aftermath was marked by damaged vehicles, broken glass and a heavy police presence.
Witnesses described hearing repeated gunshots and initially mistaking the sounds for fireworks. The sudden escalation from an ordinary Sunday evening to a major police operation left many residents frightened and seeking shelter.
Police maintained road closures while forensic officers examined the scene and documented damage to vehicles and buildings.
As of October 6, 2025, the investigation remained active. The suspect was in custody, the most seriously injured victim was expected to survive, and detectives were still trying to determine what drove the alleged gunman to open fire on a Sydney street.
