A major counterterrorism investigation is underway in Manchester after four people were injured in an attack outside a synagogue during Yom Kippur, one of the most important days in the Jewish faith.

Authorities say the incident involved a vehicle striking pedestrians before the suspect allegedly carried out a stabbing attack. Armed police responded within minutes and shot the suspect, who was later taken into custody.

Violence Erupts Near Synagogue Entrance

The attack took place at approximately 9:30 a.m. local time outside Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation in Crumpsall, north Manchester.

According to witness accounts, a vehicle appeared to deliberately drive into pedestrians near the synagogue. After the collision, the suspect reportedly exited the vehicle and began attacking people with a knife.

One of the victims is believed to have been a synagogue security guard, though authorities have not released full details about those injured.

Police firearms officers arrived shortly after the incident and confronted the suspect. Officers discharged their weapons, bringing the attack to an end before the suspect was arrested at the scene.

Emergency Services Rush to the Scene

The North West Ambulance Service confirmed that four people received medical treatment following the attack.

Some victims suffered injuries linked to the vehicle impact, while others were treated for stab wounds.

Emergency responders quickly secured the area as police established a large cordon around the synagogue and surrounding streets.

Authorities have not yet released details regarding the condition of the injured victims.

Counterterrorism Protocol Activated

Given the nature of the attack, Greater Manchester Police activated Operation Plato, a national emergency response protocol used during suspected terrorist incidents involving multiple victims.

Counterterrorism investigators and intelligence officials were called in to assess the situation and determine whether the attack was linked to a broader threat.

As a precaution, nearby medical facilities, including Salford Royal Hospital, reportedly implemented temporary security measures while authorities evaluated potential risks.

Attack Occurs During Yom Kippur Observances

The incident happened during Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

Across the United Kingdom, Jewish communities were gathering in synagogues for prayer, reflection, and fasting when news of the attack emerged.

Security around places of worship had already been heightened, but local officials said the quick actions of police officers and synagogue security personnel may have prevented a far more serious outcome.

Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham praised the emergency response and highlighted the importance of ongoing security measures for religious institutions.

Prime Minister Condemns the Incident

Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the attack as “appalling” and expressed concern over its timing during a major religious observance.

The prime minister reportedly returned to London to chair an emergency security meeting following the incident.

Starmer also announced plans for increased police visibility around synagogues and Jewish community sites across the country as a reassurance measure.

Investigation Focuses on Motive

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the suspect or disclosed a possible motive.

Investigators continue to examine evidence from the scene, review witness statements, and determine whether the attack was targeted or connected to any extremist ideology.

The synagogue and surrounding area remain under police control while forensic teams carry out their work.

Although officials say the immediate threat has been contained, security agencies remain vigilant as the investigation continues and authorities assess any potential wider risks.
