The opening round of the FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage continued on June 16 with a series of fiercely contested encounters, as all three matches on the schedule ended in draws.
From a four-goal thriller between Iran and New Zealand to hard-fought battles involving Belgium, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay, the latest round of fixtures highlighted just how competitive this year’s tournament is shaping up to be.
Elijah Just Stars as Iran and New Zealand Split the Points
The standout match of the day came in Group G, where Iran and New Zealand played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Los Angeles Stadium in California.
New Zealand struck first through Elijah Just, who found the net just seven minutes into the match. The forward continued his impressive performance by scoring again in the 54th minute, completing a brace and putting his side back in front after Iran had leveled the contest.
Iran refused to back down. Ramin Rezaeian restored parity in the 32nd minute before Mohammad Mohebbi scored in the 64th minute to secure a valuable point for the Asian side.
The result leaves both teams with one point as Group G begins to take shape.
Belgium and Egypt Locked in Tactical Stalemate
Elsewhere in Group G, Belgium and Egypt settled for a 1-1 draw in Seattle.
The match was defined by disciplined defensive structures and a cautious tactical approach from both sides. Early defensive challenges resulted in several yellow cards, disrupting the rhythm of the game and preventing either team from establishing sustained control.
Despite moments of attacking promise, neither side could find a winning goal, forcing both nations to settle for a share of the points in their opening World Cup fixture.
Saudi Arabia Hold Uruguay in Impressive Display
Group H also produced a dramatic contest as Saudi Arabia earned a 1-1 draw against Uruguay in Miami.
Saudi Arabia looked confident throughout the first half and deservedly took the lead in the 40th minute through Abdulelah Al Amri, sending their supporters into celebration.
Uruguay responded strongly after the break and gradually increased the pressure. Their persistence eventually paid off in the 80th minute when Maxi Araujo found the equalizer, ensuring the South American side avoided an opening defeat.
While Uruguay secured a point, Saudi Arabia’s disciplined performance will provide plenty of encouragement heading into their remaining group-stage matches.
